Dr Julian Rodrigues is a Perth-based neurologist with 10 years’ experience in the subspecialty field of movement disorders.

He provides outpatient neurological services at Hollywood Medical Centre. Inpatient care is available at Hollywood Private Hospital.

Conditions

Dr Rodrigues sees all neurological patients, with a particular interest in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), tremor, deep brain stimulation (DBS) for movement disorders, neurophysiology, and Botulinum toxin therapy for a range of medical disorders.

Essential tremor

Hand tremorEssential tremor is the most common movement disorder and it increases with age. The exact causes of essential tremor are not yet fully understood. It usually involves shaking of the hands when certain postures are adopted. It can be treated using medication, or in some cases using deep brain stimulation.

Headache and migraine

Head iconThere are many different types of headaches and generally they can be separated into primary and secondary headaches. Primary headaches include migraines and are diagnoses in and of themselves, compared to secondary headaches which are a result of an underlying disease or condition. A headache diary can be a useful tool to help keep track of your headaches and aid in proper diagnosis.

Parkinson’s disease

Neuron iconParkinson’s disease is a neurological movement disorder that has both motor (movement) and non-motor symptoms. Classically, the primary symptom of Parkinson’s disease is shaking although other motor symptoms including rigidity and slow movement are common. Treatments for Parkinson’s disease involve making lifestyle changes and medications. For some patients, deep brain stimulation can be an option.

Treatments

Deep brain stimulation

Brain conductionFor some patients with Parkinson’s disease, deep brain stimulation (DBS) presents as an option that can provide remarkable benefit. DBS involves placing a small electrode in the brain, which can be controlled by a remote. Dr Julian Rodrigues has extensive experience in using DBS to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Botulinum toxin

Needle iconBotulinum toxin is a toxin that is produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum and can be used as an effective treatment for a number of conditions. In particular, botulinum toxin can be used to relieve symptoms in the treatment of migraine, blepharospasm, cervical dystonia and hemifacial spasm. In general, botulinum toxin treatment involves injections into the affected area, although the number of injections and location will depend on the condition that is being treated.

Treatments for essential tremor

Hand tremorTreatments for essential tremor depend on the severity of the condition. Treatments can involve observation, medication and surgery such as DBS. The goals of treating essential tremor are to reduce tremor, and improve function and quality life.
